The product, clean and large
If the video is about a specific device, that device is the subject and it should be immediately identifiable. Tech audiences recognise silhouettes, so a clean cut-out on a plain background outperforms a busy desk shot every time.
One spec or number, if it is a comparison
Tech thumbnails that carry a single hard number, a price, a benchmark, a battery figure, outperform ones that describe. The number is the reason to click.
Cool, controlled colour
Tech is one of the few niches where a cooler palette works, because it reads as precise and modern. Keep it controlled rather than neon.
Restraint reads as credible
This is the important one and it inverts most thumbnail advice. In tech, an over-designed thumbnail with arrows, circles and shock faces signals low-quality content, because the audience associates that style with clickbait channels. Clean and confident converts better with a technical audience.
Two-product comparisons need equal treatment
If you are comparing two devices, show both at the same scale and lighting. Making one larger implies a verdict before the viewer has watched.
A face works, but keep it secondary
Tech reviewers with an audience benefit from being recognisable, but the product should still dominate. The face goes to the side, not the centre.

Three to five at most. The thumbnail is seen at around 168 pixels wide on a phone, and longer text at that size becomes a grey smudge. If the words repeat what the image already shows, delete them and let the picture work.
