1280 x 720 pixels, 16:9, under 2MB, in JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP. That is the same for every niche. Design at that size from the first click rather than resizing at the end, because resizing a finished design moves text you placed carefully.

Put a person in it. A human figure gives the landscape scale, and scale is what makes it impressive. It also gives the viewer someone to be. A cliff is a picture, a person on a cliff is a story.

Three to five at most. The thumbnail is seen at around 168 pixels wide on a phone, and longer text at that size becomes a grey smudge. If the words repeat what the image already shows, delete them and let the picture work.
