Name the trigger visually
Tapping, crinkling, whispering, brushing, scalp massage. The viewer is searching for a specific trigger, and the thumbnail that makes the trigger instantly identifiable wins. Show the object doing the thing.
Texture is the entire hook
Close, tactile, high-detail surfaces. Foam, bristles, condensation, fabric weave, wax. Texture is what makes a still image feel like a sound, and that translation is the whole job.
Close crops, soft light
The category's visual language is intimate and low-intensity. Harsh lighting and hard shadows work against the relaxation the viewer is seeking.
Muted, warm palettes
ASMR is one of the few niches where high saturation actively hurts. The audience is looking for calm, and a loud thumbnail signals the opposite of calm. Keep contrast strong enough to read at small size, but keep the palette soft.
Hands matter
Hands performing the trigger are more effective than a face, because the viewer is watching for the action rather than the performer.
Minimal or no text
Two words at most, and often none. The title carries the trigger name for search, and the image carries the feeling.

1280 x 720 pixels, 16:9, under 2MB, in JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP. That is the same for every niche. Design at that size from the first click rather than resizing at the end, because resizing a finished design moves text you placed carefully.
Hands usually beat a face. The viewer is watching for the action rather than the performer, so hands performing the trigger are more effective than a portrait.

Because texture is how a still image implies a sound. Foam, bristles, condensation, fabric weave and wax all translate visually into an expected sensation. That translation is the entire job of an ASMR thumbnail.
Three to five at most. The thumbnail is seen at around 168 pixels wide on a phone, and longer text at that size becomes a grey smudge. If the words repeat what the image already shows, delete them and let the picture work.
